Willem Arondéus (22 August 1894 – 1 July 1943) was a Dutch artist and author who joined the Dutch anti-Nazi resistance movement during World War II. He participated in the bombing of the Amsterdam public records office to hinder the Nazi German effort to identify Dutch Jews and others wanted by the Gestapo. Arondéus was caught and executed soon after his arrest. Yad Vashem recognized Arondéus as Righteous Among the Nations.
Their attack, which took place on 27 March 1943, was partially successful, and they managed to destroy 800,000 identity cards, and retrieve 600 blank cards and 50,000 guilders. The building was blown up and no one was caught on the night of the attack. However, due to an unknown betrayer, Arondéus was arrested on 1 April 1943. Arondéus refused to give up the rest of his team.
Arondéus was openly gay before the war and defiantly asserted his sexuality before his execution. His final words were:
“Tell the people that homosexuals are not by definition weak.”
“i wish i could do something 😔 / i wish the wga had a kickstarter or a gofundme, i would throw money at it” good news! it’s amazing how you can literally go onto the wga strike website or the wgawest linktree from their twitter and find links to support writers and other workers affected by the strike
I need UK journalists to not show 43 degrees is not beach weather like people are gonna die
Americans do not interact
Im Australian, and 43C is NOT beach weather. That is VERY hot, even for us, but for the UK its apocalyptic. At 43C you should not even be going outside if you can help it, treating it like beach weather is a one way ticket to heatstroke.
I agree with not going outside for long periods of time but you will have to plan something to reduce the heat within your households. Especially if your house is designed to retain heat
Fans pointed at open windows will pull out hot air and allow it to circulate - don’t put them IN the window, leave some room by the side for extra air to get drawn in.
If you can’t afford cold packs (and if you can, stock up on some NOW), get some ziplock bags and freeze them, with wet washcloths or ripped up towel inside. You want them to be ready in the freezer when you need them. Wrap them in a tea towel and put them on your wrists and ankles.
A big bowl of ice water in front of a fan will blow cold air into the room and make a massive difference. Again, if you don’t have ice cube trays get some and freeze them *now*, don’t wait until you’re already in trouble (although I am melting at quarter past nine but my thermoregulation is bollocks so I don’t know if that’s the heat or just the me). If you can’t afford to get any, clean out empty yoghurt pots or Tupperware or whatever you have that can hold water. Even if you end up with a giant ice cube from a lunchbox, it’ll help.
Even just opening two windows at a crack will allow some air circulation - I sometimes prop open my bedroom door and leave the bathroom door open, both windows are locked at a crack because of the cats but it creates a nice little line of wind along the landing.
If you’re someone who needs something on them to sleep, take your duvet out of the cover and just use the cover.
Remember that water acts as a lens - you do NOT want to wear a wet t shirt in the burning sun. I did this when I was 8 and if I tan on my back you can still see the scars.
Read the instructions for sunscreen carefully, and use the highest spf you can find. Reapply as per the instructions. If you get burned, Malibu do an amazing aloe-based spray on after sun, I got mine from Savers for 3 quid and it lasts ages. I keep it and any other after sun in the fridge, which means it’s incredibly lovely to put on. Aloe is magic for burns so definitely gravitate towards that if you can. My son got badly burned (he’s ginger, he went to an outdoor pool and they forgot to give him sunscreen) and he’s had 2 helpings of it and you wouldn’t believe how much better he is (he couldn’t even really wear a shirt).
Make sure your pets have plenty of fresh cold water to drink, and if they usually have dry food consider giving them some wet food for one of their meals (cats are notoriously not always great drinkers but wet food will get them some liquid). Keep the curtains and/or blinds closed in south-facing rooms. I have blackout curtains in the front room and the front bedroom (my son’s) and they make a MASSIVE difference to the heat. Make sure pets have access to these cooler spaces if you can create them.
Keep oven/hob use to a minimum if you can. I like making a massive pot of something that can be reheated in the microwave if necessary - the oven especially adds a lot of heat. Or get some wraps and ham and cheese and eat those.
Cordial or fruit juice can be better than water if you’re sweating a lot. Cordial is cheap as chips. Salty snacks are also good.
Go to Iceland and buy a billion lolly ices. It’s especially a good way to make sure kids stay hydrated.
I realize op asked for Americans not to interact, and whether or not they’re being cheeky, I feel obligated to reblog this to save lives.
That temperature is absolutely murder, even moreso with humidity.
Please, be safe and stay hydrated!
For reference, 43 degrees celsius is roughly equivalent to 109.4 degrees fahrenheit. That’s bad.
This is nearly DOUBLE the typical average temperature of the UK. I don’t care if you grew up in Satan’s asshole, if you woke up one day and it was twice as hot as it usually is, you’re gonna have a bad fucking time. The infrastructure is not built for 40+ degrees, and with the government doing… The thing it’s doing, I doubt they’re gonna even bother to help people, so people need to see things like this post to be able to help each other instead.
Heads up UK folks, we’re looking at hitting 40°C again in about two weeks. Now’s a great time to prepare however you can, figure out what you can do to make things more bearable
Putting a wet tea towel in the freezer for 20 minutes (in a freezer bag so it didn’t stick to anything) then tying it to my wrists/ankles helped a lot last year, so I’ll share this post in the run up in case it helps anyone else
Keep an eye out for people struggling, including yourself
I know OP doesn’t want Americans to interact but I’m from Arizona, a place where summer temperatures are over 40C, and spent a lot of time outside and I have tips:
1) Drink whatever liquid you can. Even a diuretic like coffee is better than nothing. If you can get sports drinks like Gatorade, even better; you need to replace all the water and salt you’re sweating out.
2) Wear a hat with a brim; it’ll help keep the sun out of your eyes, and if you stick a wet washcloth or bandana under your hat it will help keep you cool. If you own light-weight light-colored clothes with long sleeves/legs, wear those too. They’ll help keep the sun off and if they wear loose, even better, because a loose fit helps circulate air.
2.5) If you have short hair, I recommend covering the back of your neck with a bandana or something. You can tuck it into that hat.
3) If you start feeling sick to your stomach or dizzy or woozy, get out of the sun immediately and slowly drink room-temperature or cool water. That is the first sign of heat exhaustion, which is the first step to heat stroke. It is not something to take lightly.
4) If you have a car, it’s gonna be at least 5 degrees hotter in there than it is outside without air conditioning. Don’t leave children or pets in there.
another arizonan here! can’t stress enough how dangerous the heat is. here’s some more tips to help y’all out.
if you can, limit your activity during the day - if you need to go out and exercise or run errands, do it at dawn and dusk. when the day’s at its hottest, try your best to distract yourself and relax with an activity that doesn’t involve moving around too much - games, creative/artsy shit, reading, etc.
any nonalcoholic liquid is better than none; if you’ve been active mix a tiny bit of salt and some lemon or lime juice with your water. it’ll help your body replace lost electrolytes and it’ll still taste good. sipping water is better than chugging it all at once, sip your water more often than you think you need to.
blocking the sun out from your south-facing windows will help keep your place cooler. if you have hardwood floors, clear a spot big enough for you to lie down on - heat rises, and cool tile on a hot day feels so nice on your skin. put any salves or lotions in the fridge if there’s space, it’ll give you a little more relief when you apply them.
as for your electronics, make sure you run them on hard surfaces and prop them up so that air can circulate underneath them. don’t block the cooling fans and don’t leave them in the sun.
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CHILDREN OR PETS IN THE CAR FOR ANY AMOUNT OF TIME, AT ANY TIME OF DAY. even if the car’s in the shade. even if the windows are cracked. even if you’ve given them plenty of water. it’s not worth the risk of losing them to a heat-related illness.
i’m not gonna lie to you, dealing with extreme heat is stressful even for those of us who are used to it. i can’t imagine what y’all are going through, and i’m so sorry you have to deal with this. please, take care of yourselves, and keep your spirits up as best you can. do everything you need to do to stay safe and sane. remember that the heat will break, and there will be cooler days ahead.
We all know about the Twitter immigrants, but there seems to be radio silence on what’s happening now with Reddit users from certain subreddits doing a similar thing.
What’s happening?
Reddit is restricting their API later this month and killing off third-party apps. An AMA (Ask Me Anything) with the CEO Steve Hoffman was held and it was clear that he would continue with the changes.
In protest, thousands of subreddits across the site are planning to go dark for 48 hours on June 12th. Some are planning to continue indefinitely until the changes are reversed.
Okay, so how does this affect Tumblr?
Some subreddits (mainly queer and left-leaning meme ones, don’t worry too much about Reddit Atheists™ overrunning us) are encouraging their users to jump ship to our beloved - and beloathed - hellsite. There will be another influx of new users and many will be unfamiliar with how the site works.
What do us Tumblr users do?
Show them how to use the site; introduce them to the site’s culture, tell them to reblog shit and curate their dashboard. Sorta like how we welcomed Twitter users back when they flocked here. Kungpowpenising optional.
I’m new from Reddit, what do I do here?
CHANGE YOUR PROFILE PICTURE AND BANNER TO SOMETHING OTHER THAN DEFAULT BECAUSE THIS SITE IS FILLED WITH BOTS AND YOU MIGHT BE MISTAKEN FOR ONE. This is the FIRST thing you should do after getting a blog.
Other folks can help you with stuff like curating your dashboard or creating sideblogs (or you can look shit up) but please, PLEASE just give yourself an icon and reblog some stuff so people don’t mistake you for a bot
This is one of the first posts I’ve seen after trying to look at Tumblr again, so I’ve decided to head their advice and reblog this. I don’t even know what a reblog is but I’ll find out in time. It’s a learning process
a reblog is what you just did! it’s similar to a retweet on twitter and it’s the main way things spread on tumblr
Omg so many additions since I last saw this post! 😂😂😂
It’s funny but incredibly telling how entitled/ignorant/insensitive some of these people are… idk if it’s an education gap or purposeful ignorance.
The really bewildering thing to me is that I remember when you needed to get up and pull a dictionary off the shelf, or visit a library to look up the facts you needed. Now people have all kinds of information literally at their fingertips and they can’t be bothered to use it.
Oh dear gods, it’s gotten worse
When you know politics but no facts
don’t take people too seriously on the internet
This hits different when combined with that “Americans don’t learn other countries exist till they’re in 5th Grade” post from the other day.
Demily recently got another one lads
Also, I love that, in the sign language one, it seems like the last image might’ve been a gif of “fuck you,” screenshot at the perfect time to let you know they were about to sign “fuck you”
As a romanian person I gotta add this one too
This is my favourite post on this website
I have literally had people tell me that I’m a gross appropriator for learning sign language while not deaf.
I sometimes cannot speak, but leaving that aside, what the FUCK lol
I still remember the guy who got mad at me because I spoke about the cultural role of the Norse gods in my life and my culture and insisted that I should be “proud of my Christian heritage instead” and quite simply would not believe me when I told him I was from Scandinavia because “that doesn’t exist anymore.”
someone please edit that map of europe with the spain void to also have a void for the whole of scandinavia
Every now and then I just have to reblog this.
(while particularly loving: “Gender of the Day: Wales”)
(also “Port O’Rico”)
Okay dead ass, i am very very pale since my mother is english and french but my dad is mexican. So the other day, my managers were getting all the spanish speakers together and i’m like “me. I speak spanish” and another manager swoops in like “we mean people who actually speak spanish”
Like mate. I’m sorry that i didn’t bring a serape, sombrero and some tequilla to the party
I’m just really confused. I am assuming most of the people doing the asking and accusing are from the US, which leaves me to wonder how god fucking awful y'all’s education system is.
